Love may not cost a thing, but consumers this year are set to spoil their friends, family and loved ones this Valentine’s Day in a very big way. According to NRF’s 2012 Valentine’s Day Consumer Intentions and Actions survey, conducted by BIGinsight, the average person celebrating the holiday will shell out $126.03, up 8.5 percent over last year’s $116.21 and the highest in the survey’s 10-year history.

Online shopping continues to win over millions of Americans during the 2011 holiday season, with a record number planning to hit retailers’ websites on Cyber Monday to take advantage of one-day only deals, percentages off websites, and free shipping offers. Plus, the number of people using their mobile devices on Cyber Monday more than doubled from a year earlier.

According to a preliminary November 2011 Black Friday shopping survey, conducted for the National Retail Federation by BIGresearch, of those who own tablet devices and who plan to shop for or research holiday items, one in five (21.3%) said they would seek out group buying sites, and 31.2 percent expected to check out retailers’ Facebook pages.

(Holiday 2011) Armed with savvy shopping skills and a renewed focus on value, consumers this holiday season will shop at a variety of locations and channels as they scope out ways to get the best bang for their buck. According to the National Retail Federation’s 2011 Holiday Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, conducted by BIGresearch, holiday shoppers say they plan to shell out an average of $704.18 on holiday gifts and seasonal merchandise, down slightly from last year’s $718.98.
